Sore throat? Fever? Stuffed nose? Difficulty breathing? Some of these home remedies might help ease your symptoms:

My Mamma Says
  • Stay away from alcohol as it can actually cause nasal congestion.
  • Take a steamy shower to moisturize your nasal passages and help relax. If you’re feeling dizzy, wait until you are steadier on your feet.
  • Eat garlic. Take a large peeled clove of garlic and bite down every so often to release the natural juices. Replace with a new clove every four or five hours.
  • Warm salt water can help break nasal congestion and remove virus particles and bacteria from your nose. Mix ¼ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of baking soda in 8 ounces (1 cup) of warm water. Use a bulb syringe to squirt water into your nose while closing the other nostril with light finger pressure. Let it drain. Repeat two to three times, then treat the other nostril.
  • Breathe warm steam. Add an essential oil of eucalyptus, found at any health food store, to aid the effect.
  • A humidifier can help you breath easier.

  • Sleep. Getting 8 to 10 hours of sleep a day while you’re sick will help your body direct its energy toward fighting the virus.
  • Drink plenty of decaffeinated, non-alcoholic fluids (10 to 12 glasses a day) Good choices include juices, such as orange juice, or clear water.
  • Gargle with salts and warm water. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces (1 cup) of warm water. Gargle four times daily—but don’t swallow!
  • Sleep with an extra pillow. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and the box springs to create a more gradual slope.
Strawberry Fields
  • In China, herbalists recommend gargling with a mixture of cayenne pepper and osha root extract to take away the burn of a sore throat.
  • Brew some garlic soup – it works in Mexico where a combination of water and garlic, boiled on a low flame for at least an hour, eases coughs
  • Indulge in spicy foods. Thai, Indian or even anything with added pepper can help to open up your blocked nasal passages both naturally and deliciously
Stranger than Fiction
  • It might sound strange but if you soak a cloth in egg whites and place it on the soles of your feet, you can draw the fever away from the brain.
  • A dab of mentholated ointment under your nose can open breathing passages and help restore the irritated skin at the base of the nose. Menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor all can relieve the pain of a nose rubbed raw!
